What is a veterinary care emergency?
PetParents should consider seeking emergency veterinary services when their pet shows signs of a sudden or severe medical issue that could threaten their health or life. Here are situations when emergency care may be necessary:
Breathing Problems: Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, or wheezing. Gasping for air or noticeable respiratory distress.
Trauma or Injury: Hit by a car or a fall from a significant height. Deep wounds, severe bleeding, or fractures. Puncture wounds, especially from bites or sharp objects.

Seizures or Neurological Issues: Sudden seizures or recurrent episodes.
Uncoordinated movements, inability to stand, or confusion.
Severe Vomiting or Diarrhea: Continuous vomiting or diarrhea, especially if it contains blood. Signs of dehydration or lethargy accompanying gastrointestinal distress.
Changes in Consciousness or Behavior: Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness. Sudden, unusual aggression or extreme disorientation.
Difficulty Urinating or Defecating: Straining to urinate or no urination (a potential emergency, especially in male cats). Signs of pain or vocalizing while attempting to eliminate.
Swelling or Bloating: A distended abdomen, restlessness, or unproductive vomiting (could indicate gastric torsion or bloat, which is life-threatening).
Heatstroke or Hypothermia: Symptoms like excessive panting, collapse, or unresponsiveness due to extreme temperatures.
Signs of Pain or Distress: Crying, whimpering, or hiding excessively. Severe Limping or avoiding movement.
Weakness or Collapse: Sudden weakness, inability to stand, or collapse.
What do I do if I think I have a pet health emergency?
CALL AHEAD or - if you suspect a life threatening event - call on the way into the hospital if possible.
Unlike other hospitals offering emergency veterinary services, we ask that all PetParents call ahead (if possible) so we can immediately assess your pet’s situation and advise action accordingly. You may be asked to come directly into the hospital, have a time scheduled for you over the next several hours, or told that the situation is not urgent and an appointment can be scheduled at a time most convenient for you.
If you are not already a PetNation member, please bring as much information about your pet as possible (medical records, current medications, etc) so we can most efficiently and effectively care for your pet. You will be asked to become a Member as part of your first appointment. Membership is FREE.
Our priority is to manage unexpected health issues in a way that’s best for your pet while remaining convenient for you. By streamlining the emergency process, we aim to improve the experience for everyone involved - pets, PetParents, and our care team alike.
